A spin-off from Jodorowsky’s The Incal, The Metabarons looks at the origins of the character of The Metabaron. Spanning several generations as the mantel of Metabaron is passed, violently, from father to son (mostly), The Metabarons is like Shakespearean tragedy squared. There is no horrible twist or awful dramatic situation that is too over-the-top for Jodorowsky – and, taken in this melodramatic vein, The Metabarons is hugely entertaining.

Dark humour and absurdity also has its place in this work. When one of the Metabarons loses his ‘appendage’ in an accident, his new hardware in his groin area is where he plugs his ship controls into. His spaceship literally becomes his penis ersatz.

The art work by Gimenez is absolutely top notch. It suits the melodramatic nature of the story perfectly.

Overall, highly recommended.

Original title: Les Armées du Conquérant

I bought this on a whim, and it didn’t disappoint. It is a collection of short stories centring around the armies of ‘The Conqueror’, which are sweeping across the world to… well… conquer it. The Conqueror himself is not relevant to the stories, which deal rather with the unpleasant lot of the ordinary soldier and mostly have something grim or horrific about them. Such stories make a nice change from the top-down, hero-led perspective of many fantasy stories.

The art ranges from fine (the faces don’t get better than just ‘fine’ in my opinion) to very good (there are some very atmospheric panels with more scenery and/or interesting lighting), with a lot of heavy black shading, which suits the moody theme well.

Overall: Recommended for fantasy fans.

Ich habe dieses Buch aus einer Laune heraus gekauft, und es hat mich nicht enttäuscht. Es ist eine Sammlung von Kurzgeschichten, die sich um die Armeen des “Eroberers” drehen, die über die Welt fegen, um sie… nun ja… zu erobern. Der Eroberer selbst spielt in den Geschichten keine Rolle, die sich eher mit dem unangenehmen Los des einfachen Soldaten beschäftigen und meist etwas Düsteres oder Schreckliches an sich haben. Solche Geschichten sind eine schöne Abwechslung zu der Perspektive von oben, die man in vielen Fantasy Geschichten findet, in der es nur so von Helden und Adeligen wimmelt.

Die Zeichnungen reichen von ausreichend (die Gesichter werden meiner Meinung nach nicht besser als “ausreichend”) bis sehr gut (es gibt einige sehr stimmungsvolle Panels mit mehr Landschaft und/oder interessanter Beleuchtung), mit vielen schweren schwarzen Schattierungen, die gut zum düsteren Thema passen.

I have not yet read the whole book – so far I have concentrated on the chapter ‘Barbarella: Inventing Adults Comics Through the Book’ – for an article that I am (very slowly) writing. A fascinating read for anyone interesting in bandes dessinées, especially their status as art in the French-speaking world.

Bis jetzt habe ich das ganze Buch noch nicht gelesen – bisher habe ich mich auf das Kapitel “Barbarella: Inventing Adults Comics Through the Book’ – für einen Artikel, den ich (sehr langsam) schreibe, konzentriert. Eine faszinierende Lektüre für alle, die sich für Bandes Dessinées interessieren, insbesondere für ihren Status als Kunst in der französischsprachigen Welt.

Ok – I admit… I have a slight weakness for Piers Anthony. This is book four in the Incarnations of Immortality series. It is typical Anthony… starts strong, gets slightly bogged down in some sort of challenge at some point (in this novel, the challenge is escaping hell), overall well plotted though. It is sexist by today’s standards – if that bothers you, look elsewhere. Simple, sci-fi-fantasy, guilty-pleasure comfort food.

Ok – ich gebe zu… Ich habe eine kleine Schwäche für Piers Anthony. Dies ist das vierte Buch der Reihe Inkarnationen der Unsterblichkeit. Es ist typisch Anthony… fängt stark an, verzettelt sich irgendwann in einer Art Herausforderung (in diesem Roman ist die Herausforderung die Flucht aus der Hölle), hat aber insgesamt eine ganz nette Geschichte. Nach heutigen Maßstäben ist es sexistisch – wenn Sie das stört, sollten Sie woanders suchen. Einfaches Sci-Fi-Fantasy – ein heimliches Vergnügen.

I bought this on a whim, attracted by the old-school illustrations (I do love cheesy older sci-fi stuff). The illustrations are great – I will probably re-read it as some point just for the illustrations. The story is weak, however, and sexist. This doesn’t bother me per se, as works of fiction are always a product of their time and place of origin. But I have to roll my eyes at the ‘oooh – her bra popped open’ humour.

Ich habe dieses Buch aus einer Laune heraus gekauft, angezogen von den Illustrationen (ich liebe kitschige ältere Sci-Fi-Illustrationen). Diese sind großartig – ich werde das Buch wahrscheinlich irgendwann nur wegen der Illustrationen noch einmal lesen. Die Geschichte ist jedoch schwach und sexistisch. Das stört mich an sich nicht, da belletristische Werke immer ein Produkt ihrer Zeit und ihres Herkunftsortes sind. Aber ich kann über den “oooh – ihr BH ist aufgegangen”-Humor nur müde lächeln.

This is not the first time I have read Mort – indeed, it is an old favourite. Published in 1987, Mort is the first Discworld novel about Death and works well as a stand-alone novel.

I can honestly recommend Mort to anyone. With his Discworld novels, Pratchett managed something seemingly impossible – he combined humour with fantasy, and made a fantasy world that is actually believable, with compelling characters and interesting plots. But more than that – the novels are not ‘just’ fantasy; they are a deeply humanistic look at life, society and what it means to human.

Caroline Baldwin ist eine amerikanische Privatdetektivin und die Heldin einer Serie von Bandes dessinées des belgischen Autors und Künstlers André Taymans, gezeichnet im Stil der ligne claire (klaren Linie). Den ersten Band der bei Schreiber & Leser erschienenen Gesamtausgabe fand ich… nun ja… nett. Nicht ganz ‘die kleine Schwester von Scheiße’ nett, aber umgehauen hat mich das Ganze nicht. Nun, ich war trotzdem angetan genug, um wissen zu wollen, wie Caroline Baldwins Abenteuer weitergehen. Ich bin froh, dass ich das getan habe – die Qualität der Erzählung nimmt merklich zu. Ohne zu viel zu verraten – der Heldin passiert etwas Schlimmes – und wie sie damit (irgendwie) fertig wird, war wirklich interessant.

Empfehlenswert für Ligne-Claire-Fans sowie für Krimis mit einem Hauch vom Noir-Charakter.

Caroline Baldwin is a native American private eye and the hero of a series of bandes dessinées by the Belgian author and artist André Taymans, drawn in the ligne claire (clear line) style. I found volume one of the complete edition, published by Schreiber & Leser to be… well… nice. Is that damning with faint praise? Probably. But nice enough to want to know how Caroline Baldwin’s adventures continued. I am glad I did – the story-telling quality picks up noticeably. Without giving too much away – something bad happens to the heroine – and how she (sort of) copes, was really interesting.

Recommended for ligne claire fans as well as noir-lite detective stories. Unfortunately not available in English.

Wow – what a bonkers ride! Jean-Claude Forest, better known as the author, artist and creator of Barbarella created the comic strip ‘Hypocrite’ for the newspaper France-Soir in 1971 and released two years later as a collected volume. Because it was published in strip form in a newspaper, it is jam packed with gags – as each individual strip had to entertain on its own merits to some extent.

The eponymous heroine, Hypocrite, is sixteen and extremely badly behaved – but at the same time compelling, charming and certainly not a hypocrite (unlike many of the other characters in the comic, which include, among others, the Loch-Ness monster, a bagpipe-playing ghost, the devil, an ancient rat who wears a cat mask, and a haunted cannon ball called Robert.

The art style is probably Forest at his best – Hypocrite herself is especially cleanly drawn – in contrast to Forest’s usual sketchy style. As usual, Forest’s faces are spot on – especially when they fill a panel – he manages to convey exactly what his characters are thinking.

Some of the jokes are a little… well…. they are from the 70s. And Hypocrite herself does get naked, have sex, drink alcohol, etc. – but more for comedy effect than titillation. Still, I were going to translate this or re-release this nowadays, I’d consider upping her age to 18.

Overall I thoroughly enjoyed this volume. For me it was a bit of a milestone, as it is the first full comic I have read in French, after having spent half a year learning the language. Sadly it is not available in English or German. There is a sub-standard English translation available online – but you will miss a lot of what is going on.

Wow – was für eine verrückte Fahrt! Jean-Claude Forest, besser bekannt als Autor, Zeichner und Schöpfer von Barbarella, schuf 1971 den Comicstrip “Hypocrite” für die Zeitung France-Soir, der zwei Jahre später als Sammelband veröffentlicht wurde. Da er in Form von Strips in einer Zeitung veröffentlicht wurde, ist er vollgepackt mit Gags – denn jeder einzelne Strip musste mehr oder weniger alleine funktionieren können.

Die gleichnamige Heldin, Hypocrite (auf Deutsch – Heuchlerin), ist sechzehn Jahre alt und äußerst ungehobelt – aber gleichzeitig fesselnd, charmant und ganz sicher keine Heuchlerin (im Gegensatz zu vielen anderen Figuren des Comics, zu denen unter anderem das Monster von Loch-Ness, ein Dudelsack spielender Geist, der Teufel, eine uralte Ratte, die eine Katzenmaske trägt, und eine verfluchte Kanonenkugel namens Robert gehören).

Der Zeichenstil ist wahrscheinlich Forests beste Arbeit – Hypocrite selber ist besonders sauber gezeichnet – im Gegensatz zu Forests üblichem skizzenhaften Stil. Wie immer trifft Forest mit seinen Gesichtern genau ins Schwarze – vor allem, wenn sie ein ganzes Panel füllen – er schafft es, genau zu vermitteln, was seine Figuren denken.

Einige der Witze sind ein wenig… na ja…. sie sind aus den 70ern. Und Hypocrite selber zieht sich aus, hat Sex, trinkt Alkohol usw. – aber es geht dabei mehr darum witzig zu sein als sexy oder antörnend. Wenn ich das Buch heutzutage übersetzen oder neu herausgeben würde, würde ich in Erwägung ziehen, ihr Alter auf 18 zu erhöhen.

Insgesamt hat mir dieser Band sehr gut gefallen. Für mich war es so etwas wie ein Meilenstein, denn es ist der erste vollständige Comic, den ich auf Französisch gelesen habe, nachdem ich seit ein halbes Jahr lang jetzt die Sprache lerne. Leider ist er nicht auf Englisch oder Deutsch erhältlich. Es gibt eine minderwertige englische Übersetzung, die online verfügbar ist – aber man verpasst viel von dem, was vor sich geht.

This is the first novel by C.J. Cherryh, a veteran science fiction author, that I have ever read. Downbelow Station was published in 1981 and won the Hugo award for best novel in 1982.

I found this novel both good (plot, world-building) and frustrating (occasionally clunky language, lack of description, slightly boring characters). Overall I enjoyed it, but felt there was something lacking – a bit of ‘colour’ – if that makes sense.

The second bande dessinée that I have read in French – again because it is difficult to find this volume in English or German. I don’t want to spoil the story, so I’ll not go into too much detail. Suffice to say, that for the first two thirds of the story, it is unclear what the eponymous heroine is doing, why she is doing it, and why she seems a bit dead in inside. This all gets explained towards the end of course. But overall, I find the story… ok to good. Not more.

The artwork is typical Juillard (which is a good thing!) and really plays to his strengths, showing all the locations as Léna progresses along her long voyage.

Recommended for anyone who likes BDs that are set in the modern period and realistic in their conception.

Die zweite bande dessinée die ich auf Französisch gelesen habe – wieder weil ich den Band nicht ohne Probleme auf Englisch oder Deutsch finden konnte*. Die Handlung werde ich nicht zu detailliert beschrieben, um die Geschichte nicht zu spoilern. Es genügt zu sagen, dass es in den ersten zwei Dritteln der Geschichte nicht klar ist, was die Heldin macht, wieso sich es macht und weshalb sie innerlich so tot zu sein scheint. Alles wird am Ende erklärt. Trotzdem find ich die Geschichte insgesamt… ausreichend bis gut. Mehr nicht.

Die Zeichnungen sind typisch Juillard (was positiv gemeint ist – ich bin ein Juillard fan) und die Geschichte ist ideal geeignet, um die Stärken seines Stils hervorzuheben, als Léna die verschiedensten Schauplätze auf ihrer langen Reise durchquert.

Empfehlenswert für alle, die BDs mögen, die in der Gegenwart (ungefähr) spielen und realistisch konzipiert sind.

*Höchstens gebraucht auf deutsch – aber dann relativ teuer.

Ein erotischer Comic aus den 1980ern, der eine Parodie auf Little Nemo in Slumberland (ein Amerkanischer Comic aus dem Anfang des 20. Jahrhunderts) ist. Gut gezeichnet, das Ganze ist eher witzig als sexy. Wahrscheinlich würden bestimmte Elemente heute als anstößig gelten (aber heutzutage ist ja alles für irgendjemanden anstößig). Insgesamt fand ich es aber recht charmant.

An erotic comic from the 1980s that is an adult parody of Little Nemo in Slumberland (an American comic strip classic from the beginning of the 20th Century. Nicely drawn – the whole thing is more funny than sexy. Probably certain elements would be considered offensive today (but then everything is offensive to someone nowadays). Overall I found it quite charming though.

To finish off the first quarter of this year, some literary fiction. Dennis Potter is primarily known as a playwrite for television, but he also wrote three novels. Blackeyes is the third of these, and was published in 1987. As is the case in his first two novels, Blackeyes is a novel that breaks conventions, with multiple layers of story-telling slowly building up and blurring together. It is, however, not quite as ‘meta’ as his first two, and would certainly be the novel that I would recommend to anyone who is a fan of his TV work but has never read one of his novels.

At only 185 pages long, and with a plot that could almost be considered as belonging to the detective/crime genre, I’d especially recommend this to any crime fans who would like stray a little out of their comfort zones.

A fun ‘pop song’ of a novel, ‘light and catchy’ (author’s own words). The plot is simple, the prose is simply, the characters are quippy, but without any depth. Yes – I agree with Mr Scalzi! This is a pop song in novel form. I prefer his more serious sci-fi (The Interdependency series, for example) – but this was entertaining enough. It reminded me a bit of Charles Stross’s Laundry setting (at least the first novel, which is the only one I have read).

Ein unterhaltsamer ‘Popsong’ eines Romans, ‘leicht und eingängig’ – so beschreibt der Autor John Scalzi sein Roman. Einfache Handlung, einfache Sprache, Charaktere mit viel Witz, aber ohne Tiefgang. Ja, ich stimme Herr Scalzis Einschätzung zu – der Roman ist ein Pop Song. Ich bevorzuge seine ernstere Science-Fiction (z.B. The Interdependency series), aber das Buch war trotzdem unterhaltsam genug. Es erinnert mich ein wenig an den Laundry Setting vom Charles Stross (zumindest den ersten Laundry Roman).

Die zweite Geschichte über Lena von Pierre Christin und André Juillard. Dieser Band wirft einen faszinierenden Blick darauf (verpackt in einer Abenteuer), wie jungen Frauen unter Druck gesetzt werden, Selbstmordattentäterinnen für die Sache des islamischen Terrors zu werden. Ich würde normalerweise mich nicht unbedingt für sowas interessieren, aber das ist das Großartige an BDs – man kann leicht von dem gewohnten Lesegebiet weggelockt werden, wenn man die Kunst eines bestimmten Künstlers oder einer bestimmten Künstlerin mag.

Zum Thema Kunst, mir sind einige kleine Änderungen in der Art und Weise aufgefallen, wie Juillard Lena zeichnet – ihre Augen werden, zum Beispiel, öfter etwas größer dargestellt. Um ehrlich zu sein, wie sie im ersten Band gezeichnet wurde, gefällt mir besser – auch wenn die Änderungen minimal sind, fallen sie auf.

The second of Pierre Christin and André Juillard’s Lena stories, A fascinating look (packed in an thriller/adventure story) at how the young women are pressured into becoming suicide bombers for the cause of Islamic terror. This is not the sort of thing I would read as a novel – but with BDs (or comics), you can easily be tempted away from your usual fare because you like a particular artist’s work,

On the subject of art – I noticed some small changes in how Juillard draws Lena – her eyes are often larger, for example. I prefer how she was drawn in the previous volume.

And…. another bande dessinée in French – this time revisiting a childhood favourite. The adventures of Asterix and Obelix are timeless and just as much fun as an adult as they were so many years ago when, as a child, I used to borrow them from the local library. This story has a few plot holes, but they are easily overlooked. Overall, great fun!

Und…. noch eine bande dessinée auf Französisch – diesmal ein alter Bekannter aus der Kindheit. Die Abenteuer von Asterix und Obelix sind Zeitlos und bereiten mir genau so viel Spaß als Erwachsener, als sie mir als Kind vor vielen Jahren bereitet haben. Damals musste ich mir sie allerdings aus der Bibliothek leihen. In dieser Geschichte gibt es ein Paar Sachen die nicht ganz so logisch sind… aber solche Schwächen kann man einfach übersehen. Insgesamt – ein Riesenspaß!

Bleak with glimpses of hope, forlorn yet unbowed, lots of alcohol. This 4th novel by Jean Rhys tell the story of Sasha Jansen, who returns to Paris, where she lived years previously, for a short trip. We meet a woman who has been ground down by a series of tragic events, who is broken and yet unbowed. A woman who is her own worst enemy and also a victim of society. A woman who veers between a lust for life and wanting to hide away from the anguish of it all in endless glasses of alcohol.

Jean Rhy’s writing style is both simple and unpretentious and at the same time powerful and charismatic.

For me there are two characters in this novel, Sasha and Paris. The men are somehow empty… unfulfilled characters reflecting Sasha’s own relationship with them. Paris on the other hand come across vividly. Lower middle-class, dirty, prejudiced, sniffy.

I think I prefer this novel to the more famous ‘Wide Sargasso Sea’ by the same author. I ‘enjoyed’ this novel so much (not sure if this is a novel that can be enjoyed… maybe ‘felt’ is better. I FELT this novel so much) that I have ordered her first novel ‘Quartet’.

Diese Bande Dessinée habe ich gebraucht bei der Comic Messe in Köln Mülheim gekauft – ohne die Autorin zu kennen – aus eine Laune heraus. Die Geschichte kann ich am besten beschreiben als eine ‘slice of life’ Geschichte und eine Liebesbrief an Barcelona. Durchaus interessant und sehr progressiv – besonders wenn man bedenkt, dass sie aus 1991 stammt. Die Zeichnungen sind gut – die Zeichnungen von Barcelona gefielen mir besonders. Nur die Gesichter haben mich nicht immer überzeugt.

Insgesamt, fand ich diese BD interessant… aber mehr nicht. Es ist durchaus möglich, dass ich nicht zu der Zielgruppe für diese Geschichte gehöre…

A ‘slice of life’ story. Nicely drawn. A bit of a love letter to Barcelona. I don’t think I am the target audience for this comic.

A highly interesting read for anyone interested in the evolution of animals and ‘human-like’ sentient animals. Sadly, the book doesn’t go into the more ‘exotic’ alien concepts often met in science fiction – silicon-based life, sentient plants, etc. I feel that the last chapter, philosophising about whether sentient aliens could be included under the umbrella term ‘human’ (which is absurd – they can’t – only species of the genus Homo should be considered human – when we meet the intelligent aliens, we’ll come up with a new umbrella term to cover the two groups – no need to go shoe-horning sentient aliens into the human category) should be cut and replaced with a chapter dealing with some example aliens that are explained using the evolutionary principles laid out in the book.

Sehr interessant, aber beschäftigt sich gefühlt 95% mit der Evolution der Tiere der Erde – könnte mehr Aliens beinhalten!

Read in French. This first volume of a science-fiction trilogy (the last part of which will come out this year) doesn’t exactly break new ground, and has strong echoes of 1984, Brave New World, Fahrenheit 451, Logan’s Run, etc. But it is entertaining enough. The art is functional and has nothing wrong with it… but I wouldn’t want to hang it on the wall.

I will get the next volume, because I want to know how the story continues, and I get the added value of working on improving my French in a relatively fun way.

Teil Eins einer sci-fi Trilogie. Keine neue Ideen. Geschichte und Zeichnungen sind… nett. Gerade noch nett genug, sodass ich mir Teil 2 besorgen werde.

Comprised of The Ambassador of the Shadows (1975), On the False Earths (1977), Heroes of the Equinox (1978).

The first of the three stories included in this volume is fantastic – and was used as the main source material for Luc Besson’s ‘Valerian’ film. A great sci-fi adventure focussing mainly on Laureline and loads of awesome aliens.

The second story is fine – but didn’t really blow me away – but the art and style is as great as ever – so still recommended.

The final story in this volume, ‘Heroes of the Equinox’ is great fun – especially for fans of sci-fi BDs. There are visual and story/textual references to the works of Moebius – specifically ‘Arzach’ (1976) and the works/style of Phillipe Druillet. It may be a coincidence, but one of this story’s main plot points also crops up a few years later (in a slightly more disturbing fashion) in The Incal by Jodorowsky and Moebius.

Der dritte Valerian Sammelband. Ich lese Valerian auf Englisch, weil ich angefangen habe die Bände zu kaufen bevor ich angefangen habe Französisch zu lernen und, weil es absurd ist, dass Laureline anders heißt auf Deutsch (Veronique). Offensichtlich mögen die deutschen Redakteure den Geschmack der Suppe liber, wenn die selber hineinpinkeln…

Besonders der dritte Band zitiert andere BD Künstler wie Moebius und Druillet – köstlich!

I thought it was time to read something a little older… The Epic of Gilgamesh is possibly the oldest work of fictional literature in the world… and it is fantastic! It is philosophical, exciting, erotic and poetic. It is vital that you read the introduction so as to be familiar with the history and religious pantheon of Mesopotamia. I think the story and characters will now live in my head along with the best of Shakespeare and some of my favourite BD characters. Totally recommended.

Ich dachte, es wäre an der Zeit etwas älteres zu lesen…. Das Gilgamesch-Epos ist möglicherweise das älteste Werk der Fiktion der Welt… und es ist großartig! Es ist philosophisch, aufregend, erotisch und poetisch. Man sollte auf jeden Fall die Einleitung lesen, um mit der Geschichte und dem religiösen Pantheon des Mesopotamiens vertraut zu sein. Die Geschichte und Charaktere werden jetzt wahrscheinlich Platz in meinem Kopf einnehmen, zusammen mit den besten Stücken Shakespeares und einigen meiner Lieblings-BD-Charakteren. Pflichtlektüre!

After having read the fantastic ‘Good Morning, Midnight’, I thought I’d read the rest of Jean Rhys’s novels, and that I should start at the beginning. ‘Quartet’ was her first published novel (although she had previously published a book of short stories – which I should get hold of too) and it shows. It is very much a first book, interesting enough, but without the polish and sense of perfection of ‘Good Morning, Midnight’. First published in 1928, the plot of ‘Quartet’ is largely based on Rhys’s own experiences in Paris and her affair with Ford Madox Ford. Recommended for anyone who has enjoyed any of Rhys’s other novels.

Der erste Roman von Jean Rhys, herausgegeben in 1928. Die Handlung basiert weitgehend auf Rhys’ eigenen Erfahrungen in Paris und ihrer Affäre mit Ford Madox Ford.

Volume 4 of the Complete Collection of Valerian, comprising of ‘Châtelet Station, Destination Cassiopeia’, ‘Brooklyn Line, Terminus Cosmos’, ‘The Ghosts of Inverloch’ and ‘The Wrath of Hypsis’. These stories take place mainly on earth and introduce new characters like Mr Albert. I do believe there is a nod to the artistic style of Enki Bilal in ‘The Ghosts of Inverloch’ too – which is fun! Overall, entertaining as ever!

Teil Sechs einer großartigen Sci-fi-Serie. Auf dem ersten Blick, könnte man meinen, basiert auf dem Zeichenstil von Buchet, dass Sillage (Französisch für Kielwasser) etwas für jüngere Leser und Leserinnen sein könnte – aber nein! Diese Serie behandelt ernste Themen und oft moralische Grauzonen und bleibst dabei spannend und sehr unterhaltsam.

Jeder Band erzählt eine eigenständige Geschichte, aber es baut sich auch eine Geschichte im Hintergrund langsam auf, als Nävis, die Heldin, mehr über sich selber und Sillage (ein Multi-Spezies-Weltraumkonvoi) herausfindet. Total empfehlenswert, aber sehr teuer und schwer zu finden auf Deutsch.

Part 6 of a really excellent French science-fiction series. As far as I can tell, only the first 9 volumes have been published in English, and the publisher has abandoned the series in English. Also difficult to and expensive to get hold of the first 15 or so volumes in German.

Written in 411 B.C., this play by Aristophanes tells the story of the women of Greece, led by Lysistrata, who come together to end the wars between the various Greek states by refusing to sleep with their husbands until they agree to a peace treaty. Genuinely entertaining and funny, and absolutely full of penis and dildo jokes. Some elements of humour seem to be eternal!

Chr. geschriebene Stück von Aristophanes erzählt die Geschichte der Frauen Griechenlands, die sich unter der Leitung Lysistratas, zusammentun um die Kriege zwischen den verschiedenen griechischen Staaten zu beenden. Dies wollen sie erreichen, indem sie ihren Männern Sex verweigern, bis die Kriegen beendet werden. Wirklich unterhaltsam und witzig und absolut randvoll mit Penis- und Dildowitzen. Manche Elemente der Humor scheinen doch zeitlos zu sein!

An interesting play – especially for its negative portrayal of Socrates, which Plato claimed contributed to his trial and execution. I didn’t find it as entertaining as Lysistrata though. I also felt that Aristophanes comes across as a bit petulant: the play’s parabasis is used to tell the audience off for not being intelligent enough to appreciate the play, which in my case is probably true. The translation was quite clever in places, but overall felt rather too modern.

Ein ziemlich interessantes Stück, vor allem wegen der negativen Darstellung von Sokrates, die laut Platon zu Platos Prozess und Hinrichtung beitrug. Lysistrata fand ich aber deutlich unterhaltsamer. Aristophanes kommt auch ein wenig kindisch rüber: Die Parabase des Stücks wird benutzt, um das Publikum anzugreifen und behauptet es sei nicht intelligent genug, um das Stück zu verstehen, was in meinem Fall durchaus stimmen könnte. Die Übersetzung war stellenweise recht gut (bzw. der Text war lebendig und reimte), wirkte aber insgesamt etwas zu modern.

Bände 3 und 4 einer düsteren und brutalen sci-fi Serie. Yiu arbeitet als Auftragskillerin für den Klerus in einer trostlosen Zukunft. Normalerweise stehe ich nicht auf endlose ‘Action’, aber diese Comics schaffen es mit Wordbuilding und Spannung, doch unterhaltsam zu sein.

Volumes 3 and 4 of a dark and brutal sci-fi series. Yiu works as an assassin for the clergy in a future seemingly devoid of hope. Normally I am not too interested in endless action in comics, but this series manages to make it work with world building and intense personal stakes for the hero, Yiu. Ok – time for a bit more trashy fantasy. This was originally intended as the final novel in the ‘Incarnations of Immortality’ series and wraps up the tangled web of characters and plotlines nicely, if somewhat abruptly. Subsequently, the author wrote two more. Although I generally enjoyed this novel, I won’t read the next two. The reason for this is one sentence in the novel that disturbed me enough that I checked out the reviews of the next two novels, including spoilers. It seems that the final novel in the series commits the same ‘sin’, but as a major plot point. Let us just say that it has to do with children. Now, this sort of subject can be dealt with artistically (Lolita by Nabokov) or to show how awful a fantasy culture is (Game of Thrones), but I don’t find any justification to include this sort of thing in what I can only otherwise describe as bubble-gum fantasy. So, this is where I stop.

Eine erstaunliche gute, bewegende und zum Nachdenken anregende bande dessinée. Es werden so viele Themen behandelt in diesem Band: KI, Klimaveränderung, Kapitalismus, und viel mehr – alles zusammen gehalten von der Geschichte einer tiefen Freundschaft, die Jahrhunderte überdauert.

Wie Menschen in diesem Buch gezeichnet werden, kam mir etwas seltsam vor, aber nach kurzer Zeit gewöhnt man sich dran. Insgesamt ein großartiges Werk. Auf Deutsch gelesen.

A really good, moving and thought-provoking graphic novel that covers so many different topics, from AI to climate change, capitalism and much more, all held together by a story of a deep, centuries-long friendship.

The way that people are drawn in this book is a bit strange, but you get used to it pretty quickly. Overall, a fantastic comic. Read in German.

This is another comic that I had read before (in German), but I felt it was necessary to read in French. This is, so far, my favourite non-sci-fi/fantasy comic of those that I have read. The story of a man falling in love with a woman who he glimpses stepping out of her shower when the tram he is in has an unscheduled stop opposite her window. The story is perfectly paced, adding explanations act by act over its three act duration, weaving a story of love and lost love, and making us think twice about the actions of the characters. Is stalking ever ok? A great bande dessinée!

Ein Lieblingscomic von mir, den ich schon auf Deutsch gelesen habe. Eine Geschichte von Liebe und verlorener Liebe, die uns dazu zwingt, über die Handlungen der Charaktere nachzudenken. Großartig!
