Hnefatafl (11x11)
Game Mode:
King can be captured by sandwiching in any direction (unless next to throne or corner).
Current Player: Attackers (Black)
Rules:
- Attackers (Black) start on the edges. Defenders (White) start near the center, protecting the King (Red).
- The king must escape to a corner to win. If the king is sandwiched by enemy pieces, the white side loses.
- Pieces move like a rook in chess (horizontally or vertically). No jumping over other pieces.
- Captures are made by sandwiching an opponent's piece between two of your own (or the center/corner squares).
- The center square (✧) and corners (⚔) act as enemy pieces for capturing other pieces, but for the king: corners and center only count as blocking in surround logic.
- If the king is next to his throne (center square), he can only be captured by being surrounded on all four sides (e.g., throne on one side and three black pieces on the other sides). This applies to both game modes.
- A piece is only removed if the sandwiching situation was caused by one of the sandwiching pieces having moved to create it. If a piece moves itself into a sandwich, it is not taken.
- Once the king leaves the center, no piece can stop on the center square (but can cross it).
- Only the king can enter the corner squares.
- Game Modes:
- Standard: King can be captured by sandwiching between two black pieces (unless next to throne or corner).
- Surround: King can only be captured if surrounded by black pieces on all 4 sides (or 3 sides + center/edge).
